Here’s a totally unique Christmas gift: a brief hand-illustrated
guide to beginners yoga. I made it for my classes but you might find it useful too.
Read on for an interview about the booklet with the local newspaper.
Q & A with Kyogle yoga teacher Shakti Burke
Q: Why a Yoga for Beginners booklet?
A: Class participants often ask for take-home instructions. Over the years I’ve handed out stick-figure diagrams but have long wanted to put together a booklet myself.
Q: How did you go about it?
A: I sketched the figures which I then scanned and added to a word document. Gloprint services printed up the finished product.
Q: What can we find in the booklet?
A: It’s all floor postures, about 30 in all. It starts with warm-ups performed lying on the back then progresses to simple back-bending postures so essential to back health. Followed by transitions to forward bending and finishing with anti-arthritic joint releases that nourish and energise from the feet, ankles, knees and hips all the way up to arms, hands, elbows, shoulders and neck.
Q,: How many pages?
Thirteen pages over six double-page spreads in A4 format.
Q: Any special features?
A: There’s the sweet face of a lady who guides you through the booklet and makes various useful comments and suggestions.
Q: Where can we buy the booklet?
A: From my Monday evening classes at the Bloore St Seniors Centre venue (all ages welcome) and look out for the booklet at retail outlets in Kyogle.
Web readers: contact me at http://www.joyfulmind.net.au/contact.html for your copy, $10 plus postage. Or three for $27.
Q: Last word?
A: I’m thinking of this booklet as a condensed first edition. I’d like to produce a second expanded edition with more pages, info and mandalas to colour in. If any budding artists out there would like to contribute a black and white colouring-in design, I’d love to hear from you!
